Recover bitumen from recycled asphalt

Description

The long-term goal is that almost all asphalt that is produced will contain high amount of recycled asphalt; the purpose of this project is to create prerequisites to be able to follow international standards for that practice in Iceland. A big step was taken in the year 2024 with the introduction of equipment (at Tæknisetur ehf) to isolate bitumen from asphalt and thereby make it possible to evaluate the properties of the recycled bitumen. Also, the first steps in the analysis of this work process were taken. In a continuation, this project will build on that work and the goal is that all the work elements of the standard asphalt recycling ÍST EN 13108-8:2016 will be carried out and try to discover what the main roadblocks of these tests are for Icelandic asphalt industry. The project supports the necessary infrastructure development, the development of work processes and no less the expertise required to enforce asphalt research.

Our Role

Conduct research and analysis of those results.
